Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe BUNOL, Spain, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Organizers of the 67th annual tomato fight in a Spanish city said 40,000 people threw a total of about 132 tons of ripe tomatoes at each other. The hourlong Tomatina event, which has been held in Bunol each August for the past 67 years, took place Wednesday with participants coming from as far away as Japan, China, South Korea, Australia, France, Germany, Argentina, Brazil and Latvia, ThinkSpain reported Thursday. Advertisement Some participants wore costumes including karate masters, samurai, chefs, pink rabbits and traditional Spanish clothing. Organizers set up portable showers for the tomato fighters to rinse themselves after the event, but many instead shed their clothing and jumped into the nearby river, the report said.
