GRAVESEND, England, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Members of a British family said they were shocked to hear their runaway dog hopped aboard a commuter train and turned up 50 miles away in London.

Jane Abbott, 47, of Gravesend, England, said her family's Jack Russell terrier, Frankie, vanished from her home and apparently boarded a train about two miles away. He was spotted aboard the train at the King's Cross station in London, about 50 miles from her home, The Sun reported Tuesday.

Staff members called the number on the dog's collar, and a stunned Abbott and her daughter, Stephanie, 22, spent $93 on rush hour tickets to retrieve Frankie from London.

"I was distraught that he went for free when we had to cough up cash," Abbott said. "I would love to see the CCTV footage of that trip -- it would be a YouTube sensation. What we don't understand is why Frankie chose rail as he's never been on a train before."
