Clemente bat sells for $41,825

BALTIMORE, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- A baseball bat used by Roberto Clemente in the 1960 World Series sold for $41,825 at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore.

Heritage Auctions, which ran the sale Thursday, said the bat from Game 7 of the 1960 series sold for $41,825, while a cup presented to Honus Wagner in 1917 sold for $44,812.50 and a baseball signed by Babe Ruth -- believed to be in the best condition of all the balls signed by the player -- sold for $388,375, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Friday.

Other items sold at the auction include Muhammad Ali's boxing trunks from "The Thrilla in Manila," which sold for $155,350.

"This is our Platinum Night auction, our most prestigious auction of the year," said Jonathan Scheier, lead cataloger for Heritage Sports Collectibles in Dallas.

"If you love history -- and particularly sports history as I do -- it's great," he said. "The treasure hunt aspect of it makes it particularly fun. You never know what's going to turn up."
