Rare white bison named 'Dancing Boy'

GOSHEN, Conn., July 28 (UPI) -- A rare white bison born a month ago on a Connecticut farm was officially named Yellow Medicine Dancing Boy at a ceremony Saturday.

Hundreds of people showed up for the event at Peter Fay's Mohawk Bison farm, TheCelebrityCafe.com reported.

White bison, which experts say occur about 1 in 10 million births, are important symbols of hope and unity for members of many Native American tribes, the online news site said.

"They are very rare, and when a white bison is born there is a reason for each one to be here," Ogala Lakota member Marian White Mouse said. "It's such a blessing for someone to take care of a bison like Peter Fay will. I told him when it was born, 'You don't even know what you have on your hands here.'"

NPR reported Friday the calf's DNA had yet to be tested to confirm he is a true white bison.
