DELTONA, Fla., July 27 (UPI) -- Authorities in Florida said a suspect of indeterminate gender attempted to rob a CVS drugstore by claiming to have a bomb.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said the thief, who witnesses said was wearing women's clothing but could have been a cross-dressing man, claimed to have a bomb and told employees at the Deltona store he or she was being forced to rob the store for its prescription medications by someone who was holding their children hostage, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Friday.

However, the pharmacist said the "bomb" appeared to be a plain cardboard box and ordered the thief to leave the store. The suspect fled just before deputies arrived, the sheriff's office said.
