HAINESPORT, Pa., July 11 (UPI) -- Officials in a Pennsylvania town plagued by wild turkeys said a new ordinance imposes fines of up to $2,000 for feeding the birds.

The Hainesport Township committee passed an ordinance Tuesday night making it illegal to feed the nuisance turkeys and imposing fines for violations, WCAU-TV, Philadelphia, reported Wednesday.

Many of those who oppose the new law spoke during Tuesday's meeting.

"This is a wildlife area," resident Gail Hillmann said. "You've got a state park right behind us, wetlands. These people come in from Philadelphia who've never seen a turkey before except at Thanksgiving on their table and don't know how to handle it."
