LOS ANGELES, June 28 (UPI) -- A 102-year-old man who moved from the Philippines to the United States was one of 7,300 people to become naturalized citizens in a Los Angles ceremony.

Joaquin Arciago Guzman stood from his wheelchair Wednesday to recite the Oath of Allegiance at the Los Angeles Convention Center and became one of only 27 people more than 100 years of age to obtain U.S. citizenship in the past 50 years, the Los Angeles Daily News reported Thursday.

"I'm happy," Guzman said in Tagalog after the ceremony.

Nancy Alby, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services' field office director for Los Angeles County, said she was happy to see a man of Guzman's age taking the oath.

"It's extremely rare to see anyone over 100," she said. "We get a handful in their 90s and 80s. It's more common to see people in their 70s."
