Climber BASE jumps from Himalayan peak

DEHRADUN, India, June 6 (UPI) -- A Russian man who spent six days climbing a mountain in the Indian part of the Himalayas became the first to BASE jump from the peak in a wing suit.

Valery Rozov, 47, a veteran jumper, spent 30 days on the 21,466-foot mountain with climbing partners Alexander Ruchkin and Victor Volodin before jumping May 25 in his wing suit and spending 90 seconds in the air, Red Bull, Rozov's sponsor, reported on its Web site.

"This was my first project in the Himalayas," Rozov said. "We had a few difficulties along the way, so I am really pleased that we were able to complete the jump successfully."

Rozov said it took his climbing partners three days to climb back down the mountain.

BASE jumping is named for the four categories of fixed objects participants can jump from, buildings, antennas, spans and earth.
