Police: Man asked to be shot

STOCKHOLM, N.Y., May 16 (UPI) -- Police in New York state said they arrested a man accused of agreeing to do a favor for a friend and shoot him in the leg.

State Police said Shawn Mossow, 25, of Norfolk allegedly shot a 24-year-old friend in the leg with a .22-caliber rifle Sunday in Stockholm because the other man was curious about what it would feel like and asked him to take the shot, the Potsdam, N.Y., publication North County This Week reported Tuesday.

The victim was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and is expected to fully recover.

Mossow was charged with felony first-degree reckless endangerment and jailed in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.


Boot-shaped chicken nugget up for auction

MARATHON, Fla., May 16 (UPI) -- A Florida sheriff's office is selling a chicken nugget shaped like a cowboy boot to benefit its program for children.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said Sgt. Dennis Coleman found the boot-shaped nugget in a meal he bought Sunday from Dion's Quikmart in Marathon and decided to save it and post it on eBay to benefit the Keys Kops for Kids program, KeysNet.com reported Tuesday.

"Don't let this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity pass you by," Coleman said of the auction, which started bidding at $5.


Woman, 101, fights off thief

UMEA, Sweden, May 16 (UPI) -- Prosecutors in Sweden said an attempted thief who was foiled by a 101-year-old woman wielding a stick has been charged with aggravated theft and fraud.

Police said the 44-year-old man, who allegedly stole from 16 households of elderly people in December and January by posing as a police officer, entered Barbro Bostrom's Umea home in January, claimed to be an officer and roughly pushed his way into her living room, The Local reported Tuesday.

Bostrom said she grabbed a stick she uses to pick up objects dropped on the floor and waved it at the man.

"Do you really want it to be on your conscience that you murdered a 100-year-old," she told him during the struggle.

The man fled after Bostrom struck him and a neighbor called police.

"I'm glad that I didn't hit so hard that I hurt him," Bostrom said.

The man was arrested Jan. 30 in Sundsvall with $21,435 worth of jewelry, make-up and cash. he has now been charged with aggravated theft and fraud.


Police nab suspect in minutes of robbery

CHICAGO, May 16 (UPI) -- With security in Chicago beefed for this weekend's NATO summit it was absolutely wrong time to rob a bank, a police officer said.

Officer John McCarthy told the Chicago Tribune that he and his partner cornered a robbery suspect just minutes after a man help up the Fifth Third Bank in Old Town on Monday.

The officers found cash on the man and brought him back to the bank where he was immediately identified as the robber.

McCarthy said the robber picked a "bad time" to hold up a bank given the heavy police presence on Chicago streets for the NATO summit.

"It was just poor planning on his part," McCarthy said.
