DAVIE, Fla., May 11 (UPI) -- Police in Florida said they are trying to identify two teenagers believed to be connected to the theft of two injured turtles from Flamingo Gardens in Davie.

Workers at the botanical gardens and wildlife sanctuary said the two teens entered the box turtle exhibit Saturday without permission and were handling the two reptiles, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Friday.

The 6-to-12-inch-long reptiles, which officials said both require special care, were noticed missing from the exhibit Monday morning.

Workers said one of the turtles, Zippy, has a cracked belly shell that is being held together by zip ties glued to his shell. Staffers said he has been recovering from the injury for more than a year and could die without proper care.
