SAN ANTONIO, May 3 (UPI) -- A Texas man who has been suing officials for decades on allegations of endorsing Christianity said he briefly converted before returning to atheism.

Patrick Greene, 63, who has filed complaints and lawsuits against officials in California and Texas for more than 30 years on allegations of violating the constitution by endorsing Christianity, said he converted to Christianity briefly in April before reading the Bible and switching back to atheism, the San Antonio Express-News reported Thursday.

"I got all caught up in the excitement," Greene said. "It's easy to do when you get ostracized and treated like garbage. When you're an atheist, you're public enemy No. 1."

He said reading the first book of the Bible, Genesis, led him to once again abandon Christianity.

"The more I read the Bible, the more I realized, this is such a crock," he said.

However, Greene said he will always be grateful to the Sand Springs Baptist Church in Athens, which started a fund for him when he discovered he had a detached retina.

"We will be forever grateful to them," he said. "It brought us out of a hole."
