Bremerton police said officers were called to a Pitt Avenue home around 3 a.m. and the homeowners told them they had awakened to the sound of a burglar in the house and they chased him off with a gun, KOMO-TV, Seattle, reported Thursday.

Police said the burglar called the homeowners in the afternoon and offered to trade some of the items he had taken from their home for a bag he had left behind, which contained papers bearing his name.

The homeowners agreed and the burglar arrived at the home to find police waiting for him.

Police Sgt. Kevin Crane said the burglar, whose name was not released, was very polite during the incident and apologized to the homeowners while he was being arrested.

Police said the man, whose name was not released, was drunk in September when he drove off with the truck, which was being loaded with empty bottles outside a state-run Systembolaget liquor store in Olofstrom, The Local reported Thursday.

The truck driver, who was loading the back at the time, managed to jump from the vehicle when it began rolling away.

Police said the bottles that fell from the back of the truck and broke on the road punctured the tires of several cars before police caught up with the thief.

The man, whose blood-alcohol content was measured at far above the legal limit for driving, pleaded guilty this week to grand theft auto, reckless driving, illegal driving and aggravated drunken driving, authorities said.

Police found Cato a few minutes later at a Walmart, where he told officers he did not realize he had hit the other vehicle and he "pulled into the next stop. ... I had the runs, I had to go," he said.

Officers said Cato had a "strong odor of alcohol emanating from his breath and clothing" and his eyes were "bloodshot and watery."

Cato declined to submit to a breathalyzer test.
