NEW YORK, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Port Authority officers assisted after a woman gave birth on a New York City train, officials said.

Port Authority Police officer Atiba Joseph-Cumberbatch said he knew what to do because he helped his wife deliver their son last year in their car outside a hospital in Hackensack, N.J., The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported Tuesday.

Joseph-Cumberbatch said he and his partner, officer Krzysztof Kutarnia, were called to assist in a child birth on a commuter train Monday morning. The baby boy, however, had just been delivered with the help of the infant's father as the train was moving between the 23rd and 33rd Street stations in Manhattan. The officer said he made sure the baby's airway was cleared.

The family was transported to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, where they had been planning to deliver the child.

The couple, software engineers from Harrison, N.J., said they decided to take the train to the hospital because they were afraid they would get stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel if they drove.

Mother and baby are doing fine, the newspaper said.
