BALMEDIE, Scotland, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- U.S. business mogul Donald Trump has finally been awarded an official coat of arms by Scottish heraldic authority.

Trump had been trying to create a coat of arms for the Trump International Golf Links at the Menie Estate in Balmedie in northeast Scotland, The (Aberdeen) Press and Journal reported.

In 2008, Trump received a reprimand from the heraldic authority for creating an unregistered crest for violating Scottish laws dating back to 1672, Newscore reported.

The crest will promote the massive golf resort scheduled to open this summer. The resort, plans for which were announced in March 2006, was a controversial project that triggered environmental protests.

Mary Anne MacLeod, Trump's mother, was born on Scotland's Isle of Lewis. Trump has long touted his ties to Scotland.
