TAMPA, Fla., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Police in Florida said they arrested an injured man accused of stealing an ambulance while it was on a call to drive himself to the hospital.

Tampa police said medical personnel from ambulance #41, which belongs to Transcare Ambulance Co., were in a home on a call shortly before 10:30 p.m. Thursday when they heard a vehicle's engine start and looked outside to see a man drive away in the ambulance, the Tampa Bay Tribune reported Friday.

Police tracked the vehicle via its GPS system and stopped the ambulance at North Tampa Street and East 26th Avenue. The man, Hubert Lee Credit, 39, was arrested on charges of auto burglary and grand theft auto.

"I got beat up by four guys," a police report quotes Credit as saying. "I saw the ambulance and I was going to drive myself to the hospital."

Credit was treated for a puncture wound to the head at Tampa General Hospital.
