"She contacted Miami-Dade Police, we subsequently contacted our bomb squad. They have since examined this item, and it does in fact appear to be a 40mm ordinance, grenade type, military-type weapon," Rutland said.

Police transported the grenade to an undisclosed location around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

"It appears this is a very deadly weapon. Had this weapon activated, it could actually take out a vehicle," Rutland said.

Investigators said they do not know where the grenade came from or how long it was in Viollis' yard.
