WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Authorities in California said the theft of an iPad led to the recovery of Christmas gifts taken from a family more than 100 miles away.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said a 49-year-old Westlake Village man called authorities Sunday morning and reported items, including an iPad, had been stolen from his home. The victim called back later in the morning to tell deputies the iPad was broadcasting its location from a nearby home, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Tuesday.

Deputies said they went to the apartment and arrested Patrick Krewson, 20, of Vista on suspicion of burglary. Deputies said they found the iPad along with two flat-screen televisions, a laptop computer and more than 40 children's presents believed to have been stolen a few days earlier in Vista, more than 100 miles away.

The Vista family was contacted and told deputies they "saved Christmas," the sheriff's department said in a release.

Krewson was jailed in lieu of $20,000 bail.
