Cold cuts ice cream losses in Ind. crash

FORT WAYNE, Ind., Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Police say it was cold enough in Indiana this week that at least some of the 40,000 pounds of ice cream dumped after a traffic accident could be salvaged.

A truck hauling a cargo of Edy's ice cream overturned Friday on Interstate 69 near Fort Wayne, and when responders pulled the trailer upright, scores of cartons spilled on to the roadway.

Fort Wayne Police Sgt. Carl Egly said the chilly December temperatures curbed the melting process, making the cleanup easier and possibly saving most of the cargo.

In fact, a crew from the nearby Edy's plant showed up with pallets and a forklift and loaded the ice cream on to another truck, The (Fort Wayne) Journal Gazette said Saturday.

The driver of the truck, who sustained minor injuries, apparently was going too fast on an onramp or else the load somehow shifted.

"That threw her off and the thing plopped over," Egly explained.
