"The iPhone was No. 6 last year, so it's not a newcomer," Vera Chan, Yahoo's senior editor and Web trend analyst, said of the year's top search. "It had a cult following that went mainstream in 2011."

The Web site said the top searches from mobile devices were "iPhone 5," "Powerball," "MLB," "Scrabble cheat," "Casey Anthony," "Hurricane Irene 2011," "Kim Kardashian," "Translator," "Amy Winehouse" and "May 21, 2011, Rapture."

Meanwhile, Ask.com, where users frame their Web searches as questions, said its top celebrity-related search of the year was: "Was Kim Kardashian's wedding fake?" The site said its top news-related searches were about the Japanese earthquake.
