Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a break-in at the diner about 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Sgt. Dave Thompson said. The door had been forced open and cash was gone.

Then, at about 7:15 p.m., a guest staying at a nearby residence arrived home to find a man, identified as Humphrey, watching TV in the living room, Thompson said.

The back door of the residence had been kicked in, but Humphrey told the guest he knew the owner. The guest called 911 and when deputies arrives, Humphrey was trying to leave the house through the broken back door, Thompson said.

Humphrey had allegedly showered and put on a clean pair of the homeowner's gym shorts, sweatshirt and slippers, as well as made himself a taco meal, ate some homemade cookies and watched a movie, Thompson said. When the homeowner arrived at the scene, he told deputies he did not know the intruder, but did recognize his clothing.

Police found money in Humphrey's dirty clothing believed to have been taken from the diner. They also discovered muddy footprints at the residence that matched footprints at the diner, Thompson said.
