ROCKAWAY, N.J., Oct. 27 (UPI) -- A New Jersey rescue group said it has taken in a beagle mix that somehow survived being euthanized in an Alabama animal shelter's gas chamber.

Cody Berry, 21, a worker at the Animal Control Department in Florence, Ala., said he was shocked when he opened the gas chamber after several minutes to find the 20-pound beagle mix, which has since been named Daniel, was completely unharmed, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported Thursday.

"I opened the door, he stood right up and walked right out," Berry said. "He was fine."

The department spread the word of the miracle dog to rescue groups and Daniel has now been taken in by Eleventh Hour Rescue, a group of volunteers in Rockaway, N.J.

"He's one in a million," said Linda Schiller, founder of the group. "This doesn't happen. They don't survive."

Eleventh Hour said Daniel is likely to go up for adoption soon.
