BOONE, N.C., Oct. 17 (UPI) -- President Obama turned from advocate-in-chief to kid-in-a-candy-store-in-chief Monday as he beheld tempting tubs of candy inside a general store in Boone, N.C.

Obama, on the first day of his bus tour in North Carolina and Virginia, stopped at the home Appalachian State University when he entered the family-owned Mast General Store.

"So I just scoop it up?" he asked the sales clerk as he worked his way through the maze of sugary goodness. "That's how it's done."

As he walked, one reporter noted, "You won't find this in the White House garden, Mr. President."

"On Halloween, the first lady doesn't mind," Obama said as he scooped up maple nut clusters, macaroons and peppermint patties.

Rounding the corner, Obama saw another long candy counter.

"It just goes on forever," he said.
