NEW YORK, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- New York police said a security app installed on a woman's iPhone gave them a picture of the man who stole it.

Investigators said the $5.99 app, called iGotYa, snapped a picture of the thief when he attempted to unlock the phone with a wrong password after swiping it from a 31-year-old woman on the street, The New York Post reported Thursday.

The app automatically e-mailed the photo of the man, described as in his 20s with an earring in his left ear, to the victim.

Police said they are attempting to use the photo to identify the suspect.
