The California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco said the Australian hiker's thumb was severed by the rope during a fall while climbing El Capitan at Yosemite National Park, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, reported Friday. Advertisement The hiker was rescued by park rangers in a helicopter and his hiking partner was able to retrieve the thumb from a ledge about 80 feet down from where it was severed.
