FOREST FALLS, Calif., Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Authorities in California said a 12-year-old girl was unharmed when she discovered a brown bear rifling through her family's kitchen.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said the Forest Falls girl encountered the bear Wednesday afternoon and called her father, who phoned authorities at 2:30 p.m., after locking herself in a bathroom, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

"When the deputy got there, the bear had already left the residence. She said the bear ran out of the house and into the back yard," sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said.

"The bear did not break into the house," Miller said. "He pushed a door that was unlocked."

The sheriff's department tracked the bear to a nearby tree, where state Department of Fish and Game officers were called to coax it down.

The fate of the bear was unclear Thursday.
