OGDEN, Utah, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- A Utah woman gave birth to a baby boy alongside a freeway after a 911 dispatcher said she realized the couple wouldn't make it to the hospital in time.

Hawk Benjamin Marsden was born about 2 a.m. Monday inside a Volkswagen Jetta as father Ben was coached through the delivery over the phone, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday.

Mother Ashley had awakened in the night with contractions a week before the baby's due date.

"We were planning a hospital birth," she said. "I had prepared the whole pregnancy for a (hypnosis) birth, a calm, relaxing entrance into the world."

Instead, the couple was told to pull off the road on Interstate 15 in Ogden, Utah, by 911 dispatcher Robin Carpenter, when she realized the baby was coming too fast. It was her first baby delivery.

"When I first got the call, naturally I was a little bit nervous but I just went into a focus mode," Carpenter said. "I just kept thinking we can do this. The dad did so good. He really did a great job. He was calm. He did everything he was supposed to do."
