VIROQUA, Wis., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin couple said their black Labrador retriever was missing from their home for six days before they found her at the bottom of a sinkhole.

Mary and Jeff Aderman, who live south of Viroqua in Vernon County, said Goldie, the black Lab they adopted 12 years ago, disappeared Sept. 13 and they spent six days scouring the area for any signs of the canine, the LaCrosse (Wis.) Tribune reported Wednesday.

The couple said there was no trace of Goldie until Jeff heard an odd sound while working in their vineyard.

"All of a sudden, he saw a hole," Mary Aderman said.

The couple said they had previously searched the meadow, but had not noticed the sinkhole where they now saw Goldie about 6 feet underground.

"There she was looking up at me," Jeff Aderman said. "She had been in that hole for six days as far as we know."

The couple said they widened the hole with a shovel until they were able to fit a ladder inside and rescue the dog.

Mary Aderman said Goldie was hungry and thirsty but appears to be uninjured.

"She's amazing. She's our little miracle girl," she said. "We are very fortunate."
