MANKATO, Minn., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Two Mankato, Minn., children were returned home safely after police found them walking a goat they stole from a nearby zoo late Saturday, authorities said.

The sisters, both under age 10, got the idea to steal the goat from Sibley's Park Zoo after they attended a birthday party there earlier in the day, the Mankato Free Press reported. They snuck out of their home and were reported to police after a neighbor witnessed them -- in their pajamas -- walking the goat at about 11:30 p.m.

Police questioned the children, who initially said their mother bought the goat and that they had to hide it in a closet from their father. The girls were returned home where their parents had discovered them missing and had no clue as to their whereabouts.

It remains unclear exactly how the children removed the goat from the zoo.
