MILWAUKEE, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- An elderly man is suing a plumbing company for outfitting his modest Milwaukee home with $13,698 worth of new plumbing and fixtures.

Terrence McCaigue, 73, says he originally called the company, Flat Rate Plumbing, in March about a clogged toilet, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. McCaigue said the company fixed the clog, and then proceeded to replace the plumbing in the bathroom and install a new toilet, bathroom sink and water heater -- before moving to the upstairs bathroom and replacing all the fixtures there.

Some outside faucets were replaced as well.

McCaigue received a bill for $13,698, almost 20 percent of the value of his home, he said.

He filed a lawsuit Aug. 19 against Flat Rate Plumbing, alleging the company violated consumer protection laws. The suit claims that Flat Rate's contracts were unethical because of McCaigue's age and the location of his home, in northwest Milwaukee.

The company said Tuesday McCaigue signed off on all of the upgrades and the financing, making him legally responsible, adding that McCaigue was so pleased with its performance he wanted to contract through Flat Rate for roof repairs.

Flat Rate General Manager, Andrew Jonathan, said that was when McCaigue's daughter, and part-owner of the home, stepped in.

"So he was in trouble with his daughter," Jonathan said. "We're sympathetic to the situation. We're going to refund some of the money to appease the daughter."

Jonathan said that the company will reduce the bill by about $8,000.
