Dictionary adds 'auto-complete'

OXFORD, England, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- The Oxford English Dictionary, published in Britain, said 1,800 new words and meanings have been added to the online version, including "auto-complete."

The Oxford University Press said the word, defined as "a software feature that uses text already entered in a given field to predict or generate the characters the user is likely to enter next; familiar to anyone who has used predictive text or search boxes on Web sites," was added in the most recent database update, alongside "brain candy," defined as "broadly appealing, undemanding entertainment which is not intellectually stimulating."

The publisher said it also updated the etymology entry for "tinfoil hat" to note an earlier occurrence of the phrase "tinfoil cap."

Other new additions to the dictionary include "green fuel," "gender reassignment," "environmentally unfriendly" and "babe" as a term of endearment.
