NEW YORK, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- A New York man said a thief who stole his van from outside of a store returned the vehicle to his house when he discovered two children were inside.

Sebastian Russo, 37, said his sons, John, 7, and Robert, 5, were in the 2010 Honda Odyssey with the family dog, Colette, outside of a store on Cross Bay Boulevard at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday when a man jumped into the driver's seat of the running vehicle and started driving, the New York Post reported Thursday.

"When he drove away, my older son told him, 'Do you know you're in the wrong car?'" Russo said.

He said his sons chided the thief for rummaging through the vehicle's change tray.

Russo said the thief asked the boys for their address and left them with the vehicle in the driveway.

"I'm actually very thankful that he brought them home," Russo said of the thief, who gave his name to the boys as "Leo."
