Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe NEW YORK, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Senior citizens held "knit-ins" outside multiple New York state banks to protest potential Medicare cuts by creating "Save Medicare" blankets. The seniors gathered outside banks Wednesday in New York and Long Island to knit the "Save Medicare" blankets, which the groups said they plan to deliver to Congress in person during the August recess, the New York Daily News reported Thursday. Advertisement "Knitting is a peaceful way to get our message across. We want to give the blankets to Congress so they can see how it feels to get something of peace and love and read our message," said JoAnn Henry, a spokeswoman for the protesters. Henry said the protest was aimed at encouraging lawmakers to leave Medicare alone when they decide in September how to slash $1.5 trillion in spending under the debt plan. The protesters said they would rather see an increase in tax revenue from banks. "Banks need to start paying more taxes. They should be sharing the burden of these cuts," Henry said.
