NEW YORK, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Officials at the Central Park Zoo in New York said an escaped peacock returned home on its own after spending the night on the ledge of an apartment.

Zoo Director Jeff Sailer said the bird was noticed missing during a count Tuesday and was spotted perching on the ledge of a Fifth Avenue apartment building across from the zoo, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.

Sailer said the bird spent the night on the ledge before returning home.

"We have recovered the peacock as anticipated this morning when it flew home at sunrise back into the Central Park Zoo," Sailer said. "Our staff monitored the bird through the night, and at 6:45 a.m. he flew back on his own. The bird is now secured in the aviary."
