SEATTLE, July 31 (UPI) -- A man and his son discovered a 4-foot jellyfish in Washington's Kayak Point State Park, officials say.

Sherman Pike and his 7-year-old son Oliver found the big jellyfish while exploring tide pools in the coastal park Thursday, The Seattle Times reported.

"He thought it was an alien," Sherman Pike said. "It really did look that way. It was just so weird."

The jelly was transparent in the center, with red and yellow lines going toward the edges in the shape of a wheel.

When the Shermans arrived home they did a quick Internet search and found that the jellyfish they saw was most likely a lion's mane jellyfish.

The Pacific Wildlife Foundation Web site says lion's mane jellyfish are the largest species of jellyfish, and are common in the late summer on the Pacific Coast.
