Bees buzz San Diego beach boardwalk

SAN DIEGO, July 3 (UPI) -- Lifeguards said it looked like only one person was stung by a swarm of bees that descended on a crowded San Diego beach.

An estimated 4,000 bees buzzed the South Mission Beach boardwalk Saturday before settling on a wooden buoy rack outside the lifeguard tower overlooking the popular beach.

Lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma told The San Diego Union-Tribune the area was cordoned off two hours and it appeared only one sting was reported.

The newspaper said Sunday that the timing of the swarm could have been better. There were no professional beekeepers available due to the holiday, but fortunately one of Lerma's guards had some experience with bees and was able to get the swarm into a bee box for safe removal.
