The U.S. government is placing the 1878 Fowey Rocks Lighthouse up for adoption, but the new owner must run a non-profit group or local government and must prove it can preserve and maintain the historic lighthouse for public use, The Miami Herald reported. Martin, said leaders of the organization have worked for 10 years to enable public access to six offshore beacons between Key Biscayne and Key West, including Fowey Rocks. Martin said the organization would immediately apply to become Fowey Rocks' new owners. "We would really like people to come out there and be able to climb up the lighthouse," Martin said. "We like to climb. We like the view from the top." The lighthouse is still a working light, although it is now automatically operated. The lighthouse also has a caretaker's home, an octagonal-shaped two-story Victorian. The lighthouse stands in the protected waters of Biscayne National Park. It is an attraction for divers, snorkelers and boaters, and officials said a renovated Fowey Rocks would bring tourists and lighthouse enthusiasts. Advertisement
