ST. LOUIS, June 8 (UPI) -- A comment in a Twitter conversation between two young music fans erupted into an online St. Louis battle when a St. Louis County official picked it up.
The fight started when MileyLikeABoss, a fan of singer Miley Cyrus, tweeted Selena Gomez fan EpicSelenator, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. MileyLikeABoss, a county resident, said: "STL city is downtown. the county is so much nicer."
The whole thing might have ended there except that Bill Schwulst, a coordinator in the county planning department who runs the county Twitter account, picked up on it. He retweeted the comment Tuesday, adding: "@MileyLikeABoss thanks for the #StLCo love."
St. Louis city officials and ordinary citizens got involved. Shelley Satke tweeted on behalf of the city: "We have culture, diversity and excitement. What have you got? Strip malls?"
Schwulst eventually apologized, by phone, to Kara Bowlin, a spokeswoman for the St. Louis mayor. He did note on Twitter that the original tweet generated the biggest response so far, while he wished it had been for something more positive.
The two original tweeters appeared somewhat puzzled by the flap.
EpicSelenator asked MileyLikeABoss hours into the eruption: "why are ppl still tweeting about it? its not a big deal. lol."
