BUNBURY, Australia, June 8 (UPI) -- Australian authorities said Ireland's "Naked Adventurer" was rescued from the western coast of the country during a failed attempt at crossing the Indian Ocean.

Tracey Jiggins of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said Keith Whelan was rescued by a merchant ship off the coast of Western Australia Monday after a wave struck his rowboat and caused Whelan to sustain "a large laceration," CNN reported Tuesday.

"His injuries are not life threatening, so (he) will remain on the ship until it docks at Bunbury tomorrow afternoon," Jiggins said.

Whelan, who calls himself "The Naked Adventurer," said on his Web site he was attempting to become the first Irish person to row across the Indian Ocean. He said he would be nude for the attempt to prevent his clothes from becoming filled with salt and causing sores.

Jiggins said she did not know whether Whelan was naked at the time of his rescue.
