Chicago celebrates Doughnut Day

CHICAGO, June 4 (UPI) -- Doughnut vendors in Chicago, the birthplace of National Doughnut Day, marked the holiday with doughnut giveaways and other promotional events.

The Friday holiday, which began in 1938 as The Salvation Army's tribute to women who served doughnuts to U.S. soldiers during World War I, was marked by doughnut giveaways by Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme locations, WMAQ-TV, Chicago, reported Friday.

Dunkin' Donuts also hosted a doughnut-related quiz on Twitter for users to try to win free prizes.
