WHEATON, Ill., June 4 (UPI) -- An attorney for a Pennsylvania man accused of drugging a Siberian husky at an Illinois dog show said his client will fight the charges at trial.

Edward Maloney, an attorney for Ralph Ullum, 68, said his client denies giving Protonix and Benadryl to the husky, which was competing Dec. 17 against Ullum's girlfriend's dog at the American Kennel Club show at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Friday.

"Mr. Ullum denies he gave any pills to the dog," Maloney said.

He said Ullum's girlfriend's dog had already won the best in show prize at the time of the alleged drugging. He said the allegations were due to the competitive atmosphere.

"It's a very highly competitive world. Emotions were flying high that day," Maloney said.

Ullum will face charges of misdemeanor animal cruelty and attempted criminal damage to property when the trial begins Sept. 8. He could face up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine if convicted.
