Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe CHICAGO, June 3 (UPI) -- University of Chicago officials said they opened a 1949 time capsule containing items including a 1948 telephone directory and a Capital Airlines timetable. The contents of the time capsule, which was placed in the cornerstone of the soon-to-be-demolished Research Institute Building by university President Robert Hutchins and Enrico Fermi, who created the first nuclear reactor in the early 1940s, were presented to the public Thursday, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday. Advertisement A university spokesman said the box was opened four weeks ago to allow officials to examine its contents before they were released to the public. The items include a university phone directory, a Capital Airlines timetable, a road map, various scientific booklets, an announcements book and an unsigned architect's rendering of the Research Institute Building.
