Unclaimed $30,000 ring to be auctioned

SANTA FE, N.M., May 31 (UPI) -- Police in New Mexico said a 3-carat diamond ring is headed for the auction block if the rightful owner doesn't come forward to claim it.

The Santa Fe Police Department said a man and a woman tried to sell the ring, worth an estimated $30,000, for $200 at Earthfire Gems Gallery in Santa Fe about two years ago and police took custody of it when the woman's story failed to check out, KRQE-TV, Santa Fe, reported Monday.

Lt. Louis Carlos said police cross-referenced the ring with reported thefts but found no matches.

"Now before we send it to auction, we're going to publicize this so hopefully the rightful owner will come forward," Carlos said. "Maybe there's a woman out there that this was gifted to her and she's missing it."

Police said they had not yet scheduled the auction but it is expected to take place within a few weeks.
