'Spirits' told woman to walk nude

GURNEE, Ill., May 27 (UPI) -- Police in a Chicago suburb said a woman found naked outside of their station told officers spirits told her to take her clothes off and walk to the building.

Investigators said three officers discovered the 52-year-old woman, whose name was not released, standing at the southwest corner of the Gurnee Police Station at about 7:30 a.m. Monday, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

Police said the woman told them she was "awakened by the spirits in her apartment" and they told her to strip naked and walk to the police station.

The woman was taken to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan and was voluntarily admitted for psychological evaluation.

Study makes subjects feel Barbie-sized

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, May 27 (UPI) -- Swedish scientists said they were able to convince subjects to operate under the illusion of being the size of a Barbie doll or 13 feet tall.

The scientists at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm said they showed 198 people images of dolls -- alternately a Barbie-sized doll and a 13-foot-tall doll -- having their legs stroked while their own legs were stroked, The Local reported Friday.

The subjects were then asked to estimate the sizes of differently-sized blocks and were asked to walk over to them with their eyes closed. They found those shown images of the Barbie-sized doll overestimated the distance to the blocks as well as the size of the objects, while those shown images of the larger doll underestimated the measurements.

"It is a really strong illusion, even when you know that you are being fooled you still believe it," said Bjorn van der Hoort, neurologist at Karolinska Institutet.

Nude man crashed dump truck into home

LOVELL, Maine, May 27 (UPI) -- Police in Maine said a man believed to have been under the influence of drugs drove a dump truck into an apartment and attacked a resident while naked.

Investigators said Eli T. Hutchins, 24, of Lovell, left a party at the condominium complex in South Berwick Wednesday night after getting into a fight and drove his dump truck while nude over several lawns, The Portland (Maine) Press Herald reported Friday.

Hutchins then drove the 1994 Ford dump truck through the wall of an apartment where a resident and his 7-year-old son were sleeping, police said. They said Hutchins began attacking the resident, who defended himself by striking Hutchins in the head with a hammer.

Hutchins was evaluated at York Hospital and taken to the York County Jail. He was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, aggravated criminal mischief and two counts of assault.

Police said tests are being carried out to determine the drugs Hutchins had taken.

Bar owners ticketed for mouse races

DANVILLE, Iowa, May 27 (UPI) -- Authorities in Iowa said the owners of a bar were ticketed for knowingly allowing criminal activity at the facility -- gambling on mouse races.

The Des Moines County Sheriff Department said Jan and Scott Beach, owners of the Bucktail Lodge in Danville, were ticketed for knowingly allowing criminal activity at the bar following a May 19 raid, WQAD-TV, Moline, Ill., reported Friday.

The department said the bar owners broke the law by allowing illegal gambling on mouse races in the establishment. Jan Beach was also charged with unlawful alcohol containers and conducting charge sales without a credit card. Investigators said further charges are pending against Scott Beach.

Scott and Jan Beach said they did not know they were breaking the law with the mouse races.

"Mouse racing is entertainment, entertainment for family, friends and its something to do on a Sunday afternoon," Scott Beach said. "We didn't know we were committing a criminal act, what is the act?"
