CHICAGO, May 16 (UPI) -- A pair of Chicago sisters, ages 101 and 100, said their years were made easier by living with few regrets and having one another within walking distance.

Pearl Cartman, who turned 100 during the weekend, and Dora Elliot, 101, said they still live in their own homes in the Chatham neighborhood and have never lived outside of walking distance from one another, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday.

"Aging is something that surprises you," Cartman said. "The easier you keep your life, the easier aging is on you."

Elliot, who gave up driving earlier this year, said dedicating her life to others has aided her longevity.

"I've volunteered all my life," she said. "I felt that if you helped other people, you weren't so focused on yourself."

The sisters also credited their healthy lifestyles with helping them to reach old age. The women said they have never smoked and only drink occasionally, having recently given up the occasional glass of wine for the occasional glass of beer.
