BROKEN ARROW, Okla., April 23 (UPI) -- An anonymous Good Samaritan has taken out an insurance policy for the Oklahoma woman who has been caring for a severely disabled kangaroo in her home.
Officials in Broken Arrow told Christie Carr she could only keep Irwin, a red kangaroo, if she had $50,000 in liability insurance, Tulsa World reported Friday. She told the City Council the premiums were beyond her means.
On Wednesday, State Farm Insurance told her Irwin was fully insured. A company representative said the person who arranged the policy wanted to remain anonymous.
"All I know is it's an angel disguised as a common person," Carr said.
Irwin broke his neck as a joey -- as young kangaroos are called -- at Safari's Interactive Animal Sanctuary. He suffered a severe brain injury and was paralyzed.
Carr has been caring for him ever since.
Broken Arrow banned exotic pets after a resident was discovered keeping two lions. Officials plan to revise the ordinance in May to allow them under certain conditions. That includes insurance in case the animal injures someone.
