Get your satellite TV; gun included free

HAMILTON, Mont., March 27 (UPI) -- A Montana Radio Shack's gun giveaway for customers who sign up for the Dish Network is taking off like a shot, the owner says.

"I think it really, really fits the Bitterroot Valley," Steve Strand, owner of the Radio Shack Super Store in Hamilton, told the local Ravalli Republic newspaper.

Manager Fabian Levy called the promotion "really successful," and Strand said it has tripled his business since October.

The sign over the store reads: "Protect yourself with Dish Network. Sign up now, get free gun."

The deal applies only to new Dish customers, and they must buy a certain amount of equipment to qualify.

After signing a service contract and setting an installation date, customers get a gift certificate good for a Hi Point 380 pistol or a 20-gauge shotgun. They also can go for a $50 gift card from Pizza Hut instead.

The background check for buying firearms is included free with the promotion.

"We're not just giving guns to felons," Levy said.

Strand said Dish was "nervous" about the idea and had to be talked into it.


NYC mayor 'goes Broadway' for charity

NEW YORK, March 27 (UPI) -- New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg donned bell-bottoms and platform shoes to join the cast of "Mamma Mia" at an annual charity affair, attendees said.

Bloomberg took to the stage at the annual Inner Circle charity fundraiser Saturday night, the New York Daily News reported, as the cast told the fictitious back story of Bloomberg's media empire, singing "Pay that fee, watch the screen, winning prizes, all in Mike's Machine," to the tune of ABBA's "Dancing Queen."

Each year the Inner Circle, a group of current and former city political reporters, puts on skits roasting the politicians they cover. Only the mayor is allowed a rebuttal.

Bloomberg poked fun at his administration's struggles during his controversial third term.

"You'll have eight great years," a "Mamma Mia" cast member told Bloomberg during a flashback to 2001.

"What if I get a third term?" Bloomberg responded.

"Like I said ...," the cast member said.

Last year, the normally tightly wound Bloomberg donned tinted sunglasses, a flower shirt, hair extensions and a headband as he performed with the cast of "Hair."

After performing with the "Mamma Mia" cast, Bloomberg donned a pseudo-Spider-man costume and exited by ascending in to the rafters, saying the press has no right to know where he goes on weekends, the newspaper reported.


Survey: Most women flirt for a discount

LONDON, March 27 (UPI) -- Eighty-five percent of British women say they flirt -- hair tossing, eye contact, giggling and being overly friendly -- to get a discount, a survey indicates.

The survey of 3,000 people in Britain, commissioned by the discount Web site promocodes.co.uk, indicates on average, the women say they save nearly almost 150 pounds, or $250, a year by flirting with store staff until they get a discount.

The women say they are most likely to flirt for discounts in bars, electronic shops, gyms and travel agencies, while 56 percent say they have managed to get things completely free of charge because of their flirting. Women also admit they get embarrassed if they get flatly turned down by a sales person.

However, the survey indicates men save more money by offering to pay for things in cash and haggling to get a better deal.

The survey indicates Britons save about 18.82 pounds a month, or $30, by using vouchers and discount codes, while about they say they save about 17.91 pounds a month, or $29, by haggling and 11.38 pounds, or about $18 a month by flirting.

"It's understandable that people try every trick in the book to save themselves money. Especially in the current economic climate," Alex Attinger of promocodes.co.uk says in a statement.

"But maybe women should stick to getting promotional codes online instead of flirting if they are shopping with their other half."

No survey details were provided.


Aussie club's breast offer may be a bust

SURFERS PARADISE, Australia, March 26 (UPI) -- An Australian beach resort nightclub is under investigation for offering breast-enhancement surgery as a prize, authorities say.

Flyers for Sin City in Surfers Paradise promise contestants the chance to "win a boob job valued at $10,000," although the fine print clarifies the prize is really cash for any use.

But since the ad suggests the money be spent on plastic surgery, it may violate Queensland's ban on promoting cosmetic surgery as a prize, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

"This promotion may be a breach of that regulation and the matter has been referred for further investigation by the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation," the Office of Fair Trading said.

New laws also prohibit using "small print and disclaimers as an excuse for misleading or deceptive conduct."

Evonne Miller, a "body image expert" at Queensland University of Technology, blasted the promotion as "extremely sexist."

"We don't see any advertising for a $10,000 penis enlargement," she said. "It really highlights the double standard in society."

Craig Layt of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery lamented the "trivialization" of cosmetic surgery.

Sin City is promoting the prize at an "Ibiza-style" night April 3.
