BROOKSVILLE, Fla., March 1 (UPI) -- Authorities in Florida said a man spotted driving a golf cart against traffic had a blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit.

Hernando County sheriff's deputies said they pulled the golf cart over after midnight Saturday when it was spotted traveling against traffic in Brooksville, Hernando Today reported Tuesday.

The deputies said the driver, Eric Perez, 36, smelled strongly of alcohol and displayed bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and swaying while standing, the Brooksville newspaper said.

Perez told the deputies he had been drinking but said he did not believe he was impaired.

Deputies said Perez's passenger, Jeffery Snyder, said he had also been drinking and appeared more impaired than Perez.

Perez was taken to the Hernando County Jail, where breath tests measured his blood-alcohol content at 0.251 and 0.242, more than three times Florida's legal limit of 0.08.

Snyder was taken home and the golf cart was returned to Frontier Campgrounds, where it is used by staff. It was unclear how the two men came to be traveling in the golf cart.
