ANKARA, Turkey, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- The mayor of Turkey's capital says his gum chewing during his farewell to French President Nicolas Sarkozy was a tit-for-tat response.

Ankara Mayor Melih Gokcek told the Anatolian news agency Sarkozy was chewing gum as he descended the steps of his plane Friday after landing in Ankara, Radio France Internationale reported.

"He stopped for a moment, looked around and continued to chew. I personally was offended," Gokcek said.

Sarkozy's brief visit to Turkey, made in his capacity as president of the Group of 20 major economies, was destined to be strained. Sarkozy opposes Turkey's bid to join the European Union and reportedly repeated his opposition Friday.
