DETROIT, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Proponents of erecting a statue of RoboCop in Detroit, a suggestion first tweeted to the mayor, said they had raised $18,182 so far.

The saga of the statue began last week when Mayor Dave Bing's Twitter account responded negatively to a tweet about the idea of the city honoring the fictional robotic protagonist of the 1987 film "RoboCop" with a statue.

The supporters, who are using Kickstarter.com in their fundraising efforts, said they have until March 26 to reach their goal of $50,000 or the money is returned to donors, The Detroit News reported Tuesday.

Jerry Paffendorf, a leader of the RoboCop statue campaign, said he has given thought to the ethics of funding a campaign for a statue that wouldn't be entirely serious, but he believes the energy created by the movement could spill over to other charitable causes.
