BRADFORD, England, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- An online auction for a 1971 British Harrier jump jet restored by a former Royal Air Force mechanic has been halted by eBay, which says it is a weapon.

A spokesman for the auction site says the Harrier, because it is a military aircraft, violates a strictly enforced policy that includes guns and knives, The Daily Telegraph reported. The jet has no engine and all weaponry has been removed.

Chris Wilson of Bradford in Yorkshire, who put the jet up for sale, acknowledged a buyer might have been able to replace the Rolls-Royce engine.

The auction began last week. Wilson set the minimum price at 69,999 pounds ($112,000), and, with 80 bids received already, the best offer was expected to be more than twice the starting price.

"We have strict policies in regards to the sale of military weaponry, meaning the jet should not have been listed for sale," the eBay spokesman said.

He said the company has to obey U.S. and other laws on arms trafficking.

The Royal Air Force used the Harrier, which is capable of vertical takeoffs and landings, in the Falklands, the 1991 Iraq War and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
